I had the absolute pleasure of capturing Maria and Luke’s wedding during the perfect summer day at Arapahoe Basin (A-Basin for short)! With blue skies and gorgeous views in every direction, this felt like the perfect high alpine wedding.
It’s a great idea! Even if skiing isn’t your main passion in life there’s still a lot the mountain can offer for a wedding. A ski resort is the perfect way to get those cascading mountain views without all the hiking, have ample parking, and be removed from a town or city for a more intimate day. Many of the people attending this wedding weren’t from Colorado, so it was the first time a lot of them got to ride a chair lift! If you’ve ever wondered what that feeling is like as an adult just ask the Dalai Lama.
The entire ‘getting ready’ portion of the day went pretty quick. For the most part everyone arrived ready, so after some individual shots, it was time for the first look, which we did in the beautifully green field in front of Black Mountain Lodge. The basin behind the lodge made the perfect scene for the first look, some private time before people arrived, and an exchange of private vows on the hiking trail.
One of the couple’s must-have photos was them riding on the chairlift. We’d end up taking the ride up and down a few times throughout the day, but we had a good amount of time before people started arriving so we decided to hop on and grab a few pictures while it was just us!
Not long after wrapping up the lift ride all of the friends and family started to arrive! Having a small guest count meant that Maria and Luke were able to greet everyone as they trickled off the lift. As everyone started to socialize and get comfortable, we were able to sneak away with the wedding party for a few group pictures.
Once we got back from our group photos everyone took their seats while the wedding party hid away in the Lodge. The main ceremony area at Black Mountain Lodge is the deck that faces south against the mountain wall. It’s a beautiful backdrop, and has plenty of room to seat! After the ceremony, everyone celebrated on the front deck of the lodge enjoying food and drinks.
When all of the socializing and celebrating was done, we headed to the top of Loveland Pass for some couple’s photos of the newlyweds! Loveland Pass is the perfect place for any type of portrait photography, not only because of it’s breathtaking views, but because of it’s easy of access and not requiring a permit.
If you’re thinking of a having a small, intimate, mountain wedding, keep Arapahoe Basin and Loveland Pass in mind! Information on booking at A-Basin can be found here, and feel free to reach out to me here if you need any help!
